Fraternity history
Kappa Kappa Psi, established on November 27, 1919, at Oklahoma State University, is a national honorary fraternity created to advance college band programs. Born from a post-World War I movement to foster greater interest in band music, the fraternity’s mission emphasizes leadership, fellowship, and the recognition of exceptional dedication to the art of bandsmanship.

The fraternity’s foundation was spearheaded by ten visionary band members, led by William A. Scroggs, with the unwavering support of their director, Bohumil Makovsky—affectionately known as “Boh.” Makovsky’s inspirational leadership and commitment to excellence were pivotal in shaping Kappa Kappa Psi’s early development. Recognized as the "Guiding Spirit of Kappa Kappa Psi," Boh remains a symbol of the fraternity’s enduring dedication to music and service.
In its formative year, Kappa Kappa Psi adopted a constitution, developed its Ritual ceremony, and established distinctive symbols and jewelry to represent its ideals. The Greek name and symbols, contributed by Dr. Hilton Ira Jones, and the support of OSU’s faculty cemented its identity. Over time, the fraternity expanded to include chapters nationwide, honoring its mission of fostering leadership and camaraderie among college bandsmen.

The fraternity has consistently evolved with the times. In 1947, it integrated its membership, reflecting the broader societal changes following World War II. By 1957, it established chapters at historically black colleges and universities, extending its reach and inclusivity. In 1975, pressure from Title IX led to the removal of gender-based restrictions, and in 1977, Kappa Kappa Psi officially welcomed women as full members. The first women to join the fraternity were from Arizona State University, marking a historic step in its journey toward equality.
Today, Kappa Kappa Psi stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, honoring its roots while embracing diversity and progress. It remains a beacon of leadership, fellowship, and service in the college band community, inspiring generations to strive for the highest.

Pillars of kappa kappa psi
At the heart of Kappa Kappa Psi lie our four pillars:
Musicianship, Leadership, Service, and Brotherhood
Musicianship drives us to pursue excellence in our craft, honoring the art of music through dedication and skill.
Leadership inspires us to take initiative, guide with integrity, and uplift others within our band and community.
Service fuels our purpose, as we devote ourselves to enhancing the college band experience and giving back to those who support us.
Brotherhood binds us together, creating a family of shared experiences, mutual respect, and unwavering support. These pillars guide everything we do, shaping us into individuals who strive to be our best while helping others do the same.
Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi are looked to as role models and leaders by other members in the band and on campus. We can never know who is watching our actions or who will be affected by our deeds. It is therefore essential that we present positive qualities at all times. Being a Brother is not a part time commitment. As such, the example we set should shine constantly to inspire others. The following qualities define Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi. These qualities described Bohumil Makovsky, our Guiding Spirit. By following Boh’s example, we will teach and inspire others, as he taught and inspired our Founding Fathers.
